Playoff ball kicks off today versus the hot-streaking Rockies, as the Phils take the field at Citizens Bank Park for Game 1 of the NLDS.
This year’s team is a little shakier than last year’s eventual championship roster. For one, past the two first pitchers taking the mound (Lee and Hamels) there are a bunch of blank TBAs.
The Phils have decided to keep J.A. Happ, Joe Blanton and Pedro Martinez in the bullpen. It’s like a slap in the face to the typical bullpen guys. However, I think they need more of a punch in the gut.
I like the decision, something I didn’t think Manuel would ever do. Madson and a league-leading 11-blown-saves Lidge still may be brought in to close.
If the image wasn’t already burned into your memory of Lidge’s World Series’ clinching pitch — after which he dropped gratefully to his knees in celebration — there is no doubt the playoff broadcasts will pummel it into your conciousness.
I just don’t know if the iconic Phillies triumph will look the same this year, but I’m open to making new memories. Who’s going to step up to the plate?
