The Philadelphia Soul defeated the San Jose SaberCats 59-56 in ArenaBowl XXII in New Orleans, giving the organization their first championship in their five year history.
Philadelphia, who finished the 2008 season with a 16-3 record, pulled away 46-27 in the third quarter. But the defending champions SaberCats didn’t go down without a fight, scoring 14 points in 11 seconds to pull within three points of the Soul with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. Philadelphia would seal the championship when Rod Davis recovered the onside kick, allowing quarterback and Game MVP Matt D’Orazio to eat up the remaining time with three passes into the stands. For the game, the passer completed 26 of 43 passes for 302 yards and seven touchdowns.
Rumor has it that there will be a championship celebration in Philadelphia sometime on Thursday. More details to follow.
