Howard signed

Avoiding arbitration (which the two parties went through last year), the Phillies and Ryan Howard reached a three-year $54-million deal to keep the slugger in Philadelphia.

The Phils bought out Howard’s three remaining years of salary arbitration eligibility, signing him to make $15 million this season, $19 next and $20 in 2011 after which Howard will become a free agent.

The contract includes various monetary bonuses if Howard receives certain awards or honors, including $1 million if he is traded before Nov. 1, 2010.

This latest contract gives the Phils an impressive lineup secured for more than this upcoming season, with Rollins, Lidge, Hamels, Utley and Howard all on board to play for Philadelphia through 2010 or beyond.
