As Spring Training progresses down in Florida, the pieces are setting into place. All except the fifth starting spot in the pitcher rotation.
Pitching coach Rich Dubee has said it’s coming down to a battle Royale between old-timer Jamie Moyer and spring chicken Kyle Kendrick. Neither of these options are appealing.
Moyer has proved himself time and again, but after last season’s pulling of the workhorse from the playoff roster, I’d think he would take the hint (and Phillies heed its previous decision) that the slow, methodical approach just won’t keep cutting it in the Majors.
On the flip side, Kendrick has never shown any sort of star power or progression towards turing into a reliable presence on the mound – let alone a standout. The kid has an arm, I do not deny, but I don’t see him controlling his emotions or his head enough to be a big time piece in a World Series puzzle.
